Learning to Play Guitar? any help would be much appreciated!

I'm really interested in learning to play guitar but i just don't know where to start! I recently bought a simple Electric Guitar with a teaching video but I can't seem to learn anything. The electric guitar is so hard to learn on because I don't know how it should sound. So.. i've decided to buy an acoustic as well. I'm going to just buy a simple one to start with at Wal-Mart, do you think that is okay? Also do you think it's possible to learn from books such as "Acoustic guitars for dummies" and such, or do i need to take lessons? any advice would help! thanks so much!
Don't take lessons, they just drain you of your money. I know from experience. Start with some chord shapes (NOT POWER CHORDS) and some scales, as these will help you later on with improvising. Don't try to be a master guitarist all at once, it takes time! Finger positions would help a lot also, but is optional. Once you can play all of your scales fairly easily, forwards and backwards, then you can go where you want from there.
By the way, acoustic is a great way to go, since it's fairly cheap and pretty easy. Wal-Mart sounds good enough, but I would personally go to an actual guitar shop, as their gear is of higher quality. For your sound, just experiment! Find a good tone that you like, and keep going from there. Some effects pedals would just enhance the experience.
