Acoustic Guitar Strings? Nylon vs. steel?
I'm getting new strings on my dad's old acoustic guitar so I can learn how to play it and I'm wondering if I should get nylon or Steel Strings. Are there any major differences between the two aside from the Nylon Strings being easier on your fingers? Like do the Nylon strings sound different?
Steel strings sound much better as in brightness and tone. Nylon strings sound dull and don't hold tune well but are easier to press. You need to build calouses on your finger tips and using steel will do this, just take it easy until they form and stop when they start hurting moderately. When you put new strings on a guitar, it's very good to break them in by pulling on them from the neck upwards to stretch them out. If you don't, you will need to tune them much until they wear themselves in. Good luck and make some sweet music !!

Hi, I'm Josh. I am a local guitarist. I love music so I have been playing guitar for almost a decade now in the California bars. But I have another expertise. I am a luthier and parts dealer in downtown Los Angeles, aside from enjoying guitar sessions with my friends.
Today Iâm here to talk about stringsâ"Elixir strings, to be exact. Have you guys ever heard of this String Brand? Itâs something of an industry secret, and I use it specifically for my instruments.
Why do I use them? Simple: because most new guitarists pay little attention to the strings they use for acoustic and classical guitars. The same goes for intermediate guitarists: when they ask me or one of my buddies to jam with them, you can tell that theyâre skilled, but lacking in the tech department. Specifically speaking, these guys use low-quality strings that sound dead. Nothing ruins a good jam session more than dead strings that are permanently out of tune and pitch.
Thatâs a secret professional guitarists like to call string theory. These guys spend hours just testing all kinds of strings. Some of these folks actually work with guitar techs just to come up with what they think is the perfect string for their sound. Seeing all this effort go to waste with amateur guitarists breaks my heartâ"if they donât read about it on the Internet or somewhere else, they wouldnât even consider testing out strings for their quality. For these guys, a string is just a string.
Thatâs something Iâd like to address. Iâm going to try to gloss over the technical aspects in a way that will help you understand why Elixir changed the way I played my guitarâ"and why you should be more particular with the strings you choose, too.
Tension
First of all, letâs start talking about tension. Not a lot of people put enough emphasis on this factor when they string their guitars, and theoretically, for a beginner, it shouldnât matter. But letâs take the example of a little kid who started playing guitar at the age of twelve.
The common thing most parents would do when they have a kid whoâs learning how to use a guitar is to just buy them any old cheap thing they find on the street. The kidâs just learning, right? Who would notice the guitarâs quality?
That can be a pretty big mistake. Some of these low-quality acoustic guitars use steel strings that are so tense that the kid, who hasnât developed finger calluses and dexterity for protection, will have an extremely difficult time learning. It might even dampen his enthusiasm for the instrument.
Elixir acoustic guitar strings arenât as soft as Steve Vaiâs stringsâ"but then again, what is?â", but theyâre comfortable on the fingers. Too little string tension isnât good for your guitar since you canât get a decent tone out of a slack string, but too much can make it hard to play the guitar. It may even wreck your guitarâs neck.
String Gauge
Aside from the material your strings are made of, the thickness of the string also affects the way you play, and the way you sound.
Most classical and acoustic guitarists go with a standard string gauge of .012 at the thinnest string. Thatâs a given standard, and it usually has a clear, mellow sound thatâs a little bit tinnish at the end. The thinner you go, the wispier the sound is going to be. Itâs good for maneuvering through the fret board, though, so ultimately itâs your choice. Unless your guitar has a decent soundhole and is made of good wood for reverberations, though, donât go for thinner string gauges.
Thick string gauges, like the Elixir acoustic Guitar Stringâs resonatorâ".016 at the high Eâ"are extremely difficult to handle for amateur guitarists, but the sound, as the name implies, is sweet, rich and milky. If you know how to work around your strings and adjust your picking style to the thickness of the string gauge, the Elixir resonator is perfect, bar none.
Steel and Nylon
Now, since weâre talking about acoustic strings here, itâs a rather odd twist talking about the differences between steel and nylon strings. But the most basic difference, aside from the fact that nylon and acoustic guitars are two completely different animals, again lies in the sound.
To put it simply, if you want your sound to be aggressive with attitude and power, then you can have a steel-stringed guitar for yourself. We have great guitarists that are like that such as Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers. Hearing them play, you know that they play blues perfectly.
On the other hand, if you like your sound to be lighter and more classical, then go for a nylon Classical Guitar. We have Jazz greats who use nylon-stringed guitar like Chet Atkins, Paco de Lucia and Gypsy Kings.
Donât take the strings you use for your guitars lightly. If you can spend time looking for decent string brands like the Elixir acoustic guitar strings, do so. Sometimes, adjusting the elements of what you play can greatly affect the way your guitar playing sounds, and to a musician, even the smallest improvement in tone is a big deal.
