What are the fret marker stickers for on an upright bass?
Ok, so i play bass guitar and i am allowed to play on my school's upright bass. There are sticker lines on the bass to indicate certain notes. What notes are they referring to? Do you play on the sticker or next to it? Thanks
Play on the stickers. They should mark each half step of the scale like the frets on a regular bass. Uprights are a challenge but sound awesome enjoy
Martin 000X1 Guitar Review - A Guitar For The Blues by Jim Bruce
The Martin 000X1 is offered as a starter in the prestigious Martin range and gives a great sound for an instrument this size. Similar instruments of these dimensions are theTaylor: 110 Larrivée: OM-03 SP and Blueridge BR-43. You can find many glowing reviews of the 000X1 on line, and you can take them at their word. A stickler for authenticity might say that it can't be any good, because the body and neck are artificial, but don't don't let that put you off track!
First thing you notice, this instrument has no embellishments. There are side markers to denote fret positions, for example, but no dots on the fret board. The fret board and bridge are made from Morado. The neck is stratabond, a bit like a plywood, but very solid looking. There is no binding, and the spruce sound board has a light satin lacquer finish. It doesn't have an inlaid rosette, but is a discrete decal. I like the bare appearance of the 000X1, but of course I'm more concerned in how the thing plays. This instrument is very comfortable to hold partly because of it's small body, and I just love playing it.
The neck is thin and slick, and the body is not too light. I don't like really light guitars. The Martin 000X1 is fabricated in Mexico with the attention to quality work associated with the brand. Nut width is 1-11/16", but feels somewhat wider. Of course, Martin have the experience to make very good use of the available space. There's enough room to clear the strings with pudgy fingers, but the strings are spaced well enough enough to allow quick finger movements. The top is braced in the celebrated Martin X-series manner.
The guitar plays with great overall tone, but it's the bass sounds that really impress - as you might think with a Martin guitar. The E and A strings have a depth not heard in the majority other makers guitars. The bass tone is bit 'raunchy', which is wonderful if you like to play the blues. The fuzzy sound is a matter of taste, but it suits me just fine. I chose the AE model, which features a pickup underneath the saddle, and volume/tone controls discretely fixed just inside the body near the sound hole.
A Great Starter Blues Guitar
The guitar comes into it's own when playing the blues, in fact. Forceful finger picking doesn't detract from the quality of this marvel. The strings might bounce some, but come on, it's blues! The overall volume is not the loudest, as as you would think with a small body size, but that magic sustain must come from somewhere. I plucked the bass E and found that it was still ringing a long time after. This can give really great effects, such as bending the treble strings some over that droning bass sound.
Hopefully, you found this short review helpful, specially if you were thinking of purchasing this instrument. Of course, there are negative features I could think of. For one thing, the spruce sound board is very lightly laquered and can be prone to bangs and scratches. However, the back and sides are probably indestructable. I've given mine some pretty heavy bangs with no obvious damage. Another bit of advice I could offer - the look of the back and sides can vary substantially from guitar to guitar, and some of them are not very attractive, so go and pick one out at your local guitar store rather than order from a distance.
Conclusion: The Martin 000X1 is maybe the best little blues guitar you can buy in the low budget range.
