Guitar repair cost?
Okay, about a half and hour ago I was walking through a door with my $300 Takamine Acoustic Guitar (solid cedar top) and the door hit something, flew back at me, and unfortunately left a hole in the top of the guitar. The hole is right near the back and is about 1X1/2 in. No chunks actually detached completely but it really just caved in on itself. The sound is not very different. I think the only difference is in my head. How much would a typical guitar repair shop cost to repair this?
I think you're going to have to talk to a luthier yourself and perhaps send pics for the possibility of some kind of ball-park figure. The worse thing (playing-wise) is that you might have knocked a brace loose (under the top). That size hole probably won't make a discernable difference in sound unless you get a "rattle" from a loose brace. A brace repair (usually just a re-glue) is not very expensive. A good top (hole) repair can be. Here's a luthier I currently know that I would recommend talking to, the repair itself can be done by any competent luthier, but not just by someone who calls themself a luthier (I'd lean towards someone who does Classical Guitar repairs, they are more likely to do a good and reasonably priced job). You might be able to tell if a brace is loose by tapping on the top with your thumb. Not sure of the bracing pattern on that guitar (cedar top sounds like it might be a classical, which would have a different pattern than a steel string), anyway, tap around on the top and see if you can find a place where it rattles and that'll give you (and whoever you talk to) more to go on.
