Standard Guitar Size?
I'm shopping online for an Acoustic Guitar. I keep getting results that say 32in. or 36in. or some sort of measurement. I'm a beginner, and I need to know how big a standard acoustic guitar is in inches so I don't buy the wrong thing. Also, if anyone knows where I can get a cheap left handed acoustic one online, that would be fantastic! I'm not all too concerned with quality right now...just something good enough to practice/play around with at home for now.
Guitars come in all shapes and sizes. Even the full sized ones vary quite a bit. You sometimes see them referred to as full sized or 3/4 size, but usually it's assumed they are full sized unless otherwise noted. More often they're referred to by style: dreadnought, jumbo, parlor, grand auditorium, etc. The only time I've seen guitars listed by overall length is on the really cheap ones. Although the price may be attractive, you don't want one of these.
Let's talk for a minute about cheap guitars. As a beginner, it's understandable that you don't want to invest in an expensive instrument. OTOH, if a guitar is too cheaply made, it's unplayable. I'm not kidding......they won't stay in tune and the strings can be incredibly hard to press. Even an experienced musician has a hard time playing the cheap (under $100) guitars. A cheap guitar almost insures that you'll become frustrated and give up. So in the effort to save money, you end up wasting it.
There *are* decent guitars in the $100-$200 range. They may not have the tone of a better guitar, but you can find playable ones. The best way is to shop in a music store. If you're buying online, stick to major brands like Yamaha, Ibanez, and Epiphone. Buy from a reputable online music dealer like musiciansfriend.com.
Now let's talk about left handed guitars. Actually, playing guitar is no more left or right handed than playing a piano. You never see left handed pianos! Some left handed people mistakenly assume that they must need a left handed guitar. The fact is that you can learn to Play Guitar either way. Both hands work equally hard...so one of your hands is going to feel clumsy at first. All of us rightys had to train our left hands to make complex chords. So if you can learn either way, why not buy a left handed guitar? Well, there are a lot of reasons. Your choices will always be limited. Only a few guitars come in Left Hand models. You won't be able to play other peoples guitars, or try them out in stores before ordering. Most importantly, all the tab and instructional material will be backwards for you. My suggestion is to get a normal guitar and give it a fair try. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

Some guitarists, including those who are relatively new to the instrument, are instinctively drawn to electric bass guitars. Others prefer the standard six-string guitar. The truth is, however, that all guitarists have much to gain by taking up the bass.
The strings of electric bass guitars are generally plucked with the thumb and fingers, although a plectrum can be used. Guitarists will often find that what they learn on a bass, for example finger-picking styles or two-note power chords, can frequently embellish their six-string playing.
Another advantage of playing bass is that it can help the guitarist secure a post in a band; demand for bass players usually outstrips supply. One reason for this is the mistaken assumption that electric bass guitars merely play an "invisible" supporting role. A bass however drives a band, and bass lines can be melodic in their own right.
Some guitarists are also deterred by the unfamiliarity of playing what is the equivalent of the four bottom strings of their six-string guitar; often the instinct is to play these strings as if they mirrored the top four. One short-term solution is simply to re-tune the strings so that they do mirror the top four, in other words to re-tune from EADG to DGBE.
