How to drill through wood ?
I'm using a brad-point bit to drill through 1" thick spruce but the wood always 'breaks out' when I get to the other side. So entry is smooth, and the bit goes through the wood real fast and then there's just a flap of wood that breaks off at the other side of the whole, same thing happens with a forstner bit and a regular twist bit.
Is there anyway to prevent this?
With a bit that large you have to clamp a piece of scrap wood to the back side or bottom to prevent tear out. If there is no gap between the board you're drilling through and the scrap piece there will be little or no splintering on the back side.
With a spade, brad point, or forstner bit you can always just go until the little point in the middle just begins to poke through the other side and then just flip the piece over and use the little hole as a guide to start over and that should help prevent tear out, too.
But the best way to absolutely prevent chipping is to firmly clamp a scrap piece onto the back or bottom of the piece you're drilling through.
